many a times i wonder if i have taken the wrong route in my carier. many times i wonder if i should have taken marine biology instead of the pain in the neck degree i took 12 years ago. no doubt the money is good, SOMETIMES there is satisfaction but im not sure about the love in the work that i do.
my boss has this love for aquariums and keeps a few of them in my work place. last year, a marine aquarium appeared. no doubt i was initially in awe as its a novelty. then i felt really sad about it and thought it was wrong but some how the feeling was strong.
a couple of months back i was posted to that place where the marine aquarium is. i feel sad every single day i went to work. finally had the guts one day to stand up against my boss and told him exactly how i felt.
reading macro and reef life books by andrea and antonella ferrari broaded my knowledge on the marine creatures i see during my dives. together with a book on sipadan, kapalai and mabul, i felt the love for marine biology even more and more.
sometimes i feel like quitting my job and persuing something that i truely love but i think i have missed the boat. if i quit now and study 3-4 years, by the time i graduate, i'll be in my mid 30s and im not sure if i'd be in my peak performance physically for this demanding line. on top of that, the money is not as good as my current job and i would have to start back from the bottom on the ladder...
anyways, my first step is convince my boss to STOP supporting the marine aquarium. many fishes have died and the aquarium is not maintained properly as i see it. he claims that the fishes cheer the kids up but why should we SACRIFICE these vunerable creatures for the sake of the kids. we can cheer the kids up with OTHER way. on top of that we have to EDUCATE our kids about our sea and marine life. if not, there will be no more marine life for them to enjoy in the future...
